WHAT HAPPENED

PARIS – Tommy FLEETWOOD (GBR) put himself in contention for the biggest victory of his career as he drew on fond memories to card a seven-under-par 64 in his second round on Friday, despite not feeling he was at his best.

The Briton, star of the show when Le Golf National hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018, was particularly delighted with his short game as he joined Xander SCHAUFFELE (USA) and Hideki MATSUYAMA (JPN) at the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the men’s Olympic golf tournament.

Unlike his co-leaders, FLEETWOOD is yet to win a Major, and while he knows that he cannot rely on past Paris form to deliver an Olympic title, he is certain “you're always better off coming to a course where you have good feelings and good things have happened”.

Spain’s Jon RAHM knows how to win almost everywhere and the two-time Major champion is two shots back after adding a 66 to his opening 67 while Thomas DETRY (BEL), a World Cup winner in 2018, produced the round of the day. His eight-under-par 63 catapulted him into a tie for fifth with C.T. PAN (TPE) and Tom KIM (KOR).

STAT OF THE DAY

For the second successive Olympic Games, Xander SCHAUFFELE has shot a two-round score of 131 and held the halfway lead. At Tokyo 2020, the USA star went on to claim gold with a four-round total of 266, one ahead of silver medallist Rory SABBATINI (SVK).

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Golf continues on Saturday for the third round of the men’s competition at Le Golf National. Co-leaders SCHAUFFELE, MATSUYAMA and FLEETWOOD are in the final group, teeing off at 12:39 local time.

RAHM goes out just ahead of the trio at the top, starting at 12:28 alongside DETRY and PAN.
